At Chapelco, Baruzzi Farriol wins this time with a comeback, Hilzinger 2nd again. Unkovskoy also makes it a double among the men

It was the second consecutive giant slalom for both fields on the snow at Chapelco, bringing the South American Cup stage to a close with Francesca Baruzzi Farriol once again celebrating on home snow.

The Argentine, this time, secured the double with a comeback, having to make up 12 hundredths on Jessica Hilzinger after the first run: the German, 2nd as she was yesterday in run 1, finished 49 hundredths behind, beating Andorran Merina Girones by more than a second. Girones completed the podium in third, 1”52 behind, followed by Argentina’s Begue, who is targeting the overall South American Cup standings, in fourth, nearly 3” back. The British skiers Gorringe and Howeson followed, while Frenchwoman Chalamel took seventh place.

In the men’s giant slalom, 24-year-old American Nicholas Unkovskoy celebrated another victory, once again winning with a truly perfect second run and “breaking up” the mid-race dominance of the Germans: Nickco Palamaras, still the main favourite and leading after the first run as he did on Monday, had to settle for another third place, 45 hundredths behind, and just two hundredths ahead of Nicolas Quintero. In his home event, Quintero produced a dream climb from 25th to second.

Swiss skier Cyril Eberle was fourth, 1”01 behind, followed by Zerhoch as the second German in the standings. Dutchman Linse finished an excellent sixth, American Iacobelli was seventh ahead of Japan’s Aihara, Argentina’s Gravier and another German, Krauss, who had been third at the halfway point behind compatriots Palamaras and Amman but collapsed to 17th at the finish after yesterday’s podium. Edoardo Simonelli finished a solid 24th, 3”09 back, gaining four places in the second run.

The SAC returns on Thursday, again in Argentina with the technical disciplines, this time at Cerro Catedral.
