On Sunday morning Cortina woke up under a heavy snowfall, more than expected and forcing the men of Alberto Ghezze, the race director of Fondazione Cortina 2021 for these world championships, to do extra work.
It was decided to enter the track with the cats, then in the afternoon the rain returned, which turned into snow during the opening ceremony; it is precisely the consistency of a wet coat, with temperatures that remain above freezing, which is worrying from a Monday women's alpine combined perspective.
It will be a long night of work, since it should snow at high altitude at least until mid-morning tomorrow, just before the start of the slalom, scheduled for 11.00; the inversion of the two heats obviously also caused controversy among the teams, since it also substantially changed the technical aspects of the race, for example forcing you to start with bibs 23 and 24 in slalom (with the track likely to deteriorate , although the base is very good) two of the big favorites, Petra Vlhova and Mikaela Shiffrin.
Possible postponement? It is clear that if it were to snow even more than expected (over 10-15 cm between night and morning) the race would be really at risk, but the world calendar somehow forces us to try to bring home this first appointment, so like the super-g on Tuesday (a complicated weather is expected until Thursday), given that the only free day is Monday 15 February and, with the necessary alternation with the men's races for the final common stretch, upset the program becomes in fact impossible.
