“Struck off by FISI, the silence of the skiing world killed us twice”: Olga and Marcello Franzoso make no secret of their feelings

With no reservations, as had already emerged in the months following the tragedy that took their son from them, Olga and Marcello Franzoso gave an interview in recent hours to Matteo Macor, published in La Repubblica, exactly one year after Matteo’s death.

From 15 September 2025, two days after the tragedy on the course at La Parva, through to the following Monday, when the young man died in a clinic in Santiago, Chile, and now to 15 September 2026, with nothing having concretely changed in terms of support for athletes and therefore safety. Indeed, the parents of the Ligurian speed skier, born in 1999, were also direct in their criticism of the people involved in the white circus. “Before Matteo, Matilde Lorenzi died—a similar tragedy—and do you think anything has changed in terms of regulations? These days the Italian national team is back there, in Chile; the fencing that Matteo crashed into is no longer there, but the athletes are going faster and faster, and the safety measures are inadequate.

Do you think the athletes have said anything? One of them died on the course where they all train, and they cannot find the strength to come together and demand greater safety.

In a year, everything has remained at a standstill; not a single step forward has been taken to establish responsibility for what happened. The silence of the skiing world—the world in which Matteo grew up—is killing us twice over. FISI has erased us: in 12 months they have not written to us or involved us in anything. It is unbelievable.

During these months, only the Guardia di Finanza stood by us.” And the military corps of which Franzoso was a member remembered him in Predazzo today, on the anniversary of his death, by dedicating a room at the museum of the Guardia di Finanza Alpine School to him.
