The Tofane and the wonderful mountains of Cortina d''Ampezzo are the home of Kristian Ghedina, one of the most victorious Italian downhillers in the history of the World Cup, who as ambassador of the world championship event scheduled for February 2021 in the heart of the Queen of the Dolomites , is told between past, present and future towards the 2021 Alpine Ski World Championships and the 2026 Olympics.
“The Tofane are my home, since I was a child I went out directly with skis on my feet to reach these slopes. I remember the descents as a boy with Alberto Ghezze, now head of the sports area of the Cortina 2021 Foundation, whom I have always considered my mentor and guru for skiing, or when after school commitments and with the ski club I ran to take the last race of the Arrow in the Sky leading to Ra Valles: the last descent of the day from up there was a real lust for me ”.
The “Ghedo” relives splendid memories: “From Col Druscié I loved to go down the old track that met the road to Lake Ghedina: here, in the absence of traffic, the greatest fun was to take a run and ... jump it. Favorite Tofana ski area? I like them all, but the Forcella Rossa has something more because it allows you to tackle curves in conduction without losing too much speed, thanks to two very long walls and a high slope; here, moreover, the natural snow and the altitude allow you to ski in good conditions until the end of the season. Col Druscié (which will host the world champion slaloms, ed), on the other hand, is special for the slope in the middle of the woods and the jumps between the rocks ”.
As the face of the Cortina 2021 World Cup, what does this event represent for the Ampezzo ace, and what expectations does it bring with it? "I do not hide that when I learned of the assignment of the event in Cortina I dreamed of returning to train and compete - Ghedina's response - Today as a former athlete, passionate about skiing and Ampezzo doc, I believe that my contribution can be valuable. I am convinced that these international events bring the locality a breath of fresh air that it needs, pushing it to renew itself and get back into the game, not only living the memory of the '56 Olympics.
It is a train that we managed to catch and that will bring back a unique place of its kind. The 2026 Olympics are a great emotion for me and will be a great opportunity for Cortina ”.
And on the projects relating to the new ski lifts that have recently been affecting the Tofane area, such as the modern Tofana-Freccia nel Cielo cable car ... "The quality of the ski lifts is fundamental, as is that of the slopes, aspect of the viability, the organization - the Ghedo analysis - Often the open-air construction sites of these projects bring temporary changes to the territory, but it is a moment of transition necessary for a better result: present itself at the forefront, always respecting the territory and having the least impact from a landscape and environmental point of view.
The construction of the new Tofana-Freccia nel Cielo cable car, and now also of the four-seater Ra Valles Bus Tofana, represents a first important goal in the project leading to the 2021 World Cup. The new 47 cabins, capable of carrying up to 1800 people to the 'now, they have in fact made it possible to reduce waiting times to a minimum by responding to modern standards of comfort, quality and technology and promoting sustainability in terms of mobility and accessibility, also thanks to the construction of the intermediate station in Colfiere which will welcome spectators.
While the new four-seater "Seggiovia Bus Tofana - Ra Valles" renews a ski route on natural snow allowing the skier to reach almost Cima Tofana, on a completely modernized chairlift suitable for everyone's needs ":
