Felix Neureuther says he is convinced that the next season of the white circus can be complete, at least close to the normalcy that everyone dreams of.
During the "Blickpunkt Sport" program of Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR, the public broadcaster of Bavaria), the former German slalomgigantista spoke about the future, defining the post-pandemic crisis as an opportunity to be seized in some way. "The hope is that the races will be more sustainable in the future, but at this moment it becomes fundamental that sport returns to be part of the normalcy of society and that events take place".
Germany has been a pioneer in this sense, with the restart of the Bundesliga of football before all the other leagues: "It is clear that even in skiing there could be race weekends without an audience, but I believe that in our sport it is possible maintain the social distancing between the people at the edge of the track or in the finish area ”, Felix thought.
As noted, the scenarios evaluated by the FIS are three and Neureuther sees them in a positive way: “The first option is obviously that all the races are played, the second that there would be from 36 to 38, the third that we must concentrate only on the great classics, such as Wengen and Kitzbuehel for a mini European calendar with men and women engaged in the same locations. I tell the truth: once everything is back to normal, the last scenario that would lead you to focus on big events and basic disciplines, I just wouldn't mind. Rather...". A concept already expressed in the past by Neureuther, opposed to parallels, combined and in general a calendar so full of races.
On the subject of world championships in Cortina, however, the Bavarian is equally clear: “It would be a disaster for athletes to move to 2022, there is no doubt. The FIS must support the organization ". And the good Felix, who in the 2019/2020 season immediately became the protagonist of the comment, from commentator of the ARD network, in the end concluded that he had "the hope and certainty that the World Cup season can take place fairly normally".
