After excellent days on skis for Goggia, Pirovano, Curtoni and Bassino (and the giant slalom group), it was a “day off” for the Italian team in Tierra del Fuego. In Chile, the first South American Cup downhill races are being held today, while the giant slaloms of the New Zealand national championships took place at Coronet Peak and, in the overall standings, Canada’s Forget and Norway’s Hagen came out on top, with Francesco Zucchini 5th.

The Italian women’s elite group, who have been in Argentina for more than a week, had their first full recovery day, enjoying some time in Ushuaia for Marta Bassino, Elena Curtoni, Sofia Goggia and Laura Pirovano, who so far have put together an excellent amount of training, especially in giant slalom.
On the slopes of Cerro Castor, it is worth remembering that the Italian World Cup teams also include the seven giant slalom specialists from coach Agazzi’s squad (everyone except Martina Peterlini) and the ten representatives of the technical disciplines. The speed specialists will soon arrive in La Parva, and the Chilean resort will host the start of the competitive speed season today.
A women’s and a men’s downhill are scheduled for the resumption of the South American Cup, following the cancellation of the giant slaloms in El Colorado and the slaloms at La Parva last weekend; only one training run will precede the races, which will take place in the late Italian afternoon. The second downhill races will be held on Wednesday, followed by the super-Gs on Thursday and Friday.
As for the competitive events, racing resumed at Coronet Peak in recent hours: FIS giant slaloms that also counted toward the New Zealand national championships. The men’s race was won by the very young Norwegian (born in 2007) Storm Andre Hagen, who beat Lithuania’s Andrej Drukarov by 26 hundredths and Adam Zampa by four tenths, with American Mikell fourth and Francesco Riccardo Zucchini producing another solid result in fifth place, 1”79 behind. The other Italian in the race, 2010-born Giovanni Ceccarelli, finished 30th, while the national title went to Toby Jackson, 10th overall.
Among the women, with New Zealand celebrating Alaska Speedy (9th in the FIS giant slalom), Canada’s Arianne Forget dominated by a wide margin, the 2003-born skier finishing 1”60 ahead of Switzerland’s Faye Buff and 1”90 ahead of Great Britain’s Victoria Palla. From fourth to sixth place came the Australians Hoffman, Heaydon and Gilson in succession. Matilde Rava, the only Italian in the race, finished 26th. The slaloms are next tomorrow.
