The Congress of the International Ski Federation (FIS) will be held in Milan on Thursday 26 May, which will elect its President for the two-year period 2022-2024 (in addition to 18 directors, while Hannah Kearney and Martti Jylha are already representatives of athletes and will remain so until 2023), and will see the participation in the presence of a delegate for each federation, with two representatives for each of the candidate nations for the World Championships in the coming years, while two other delegates per country will take part in the online work.
The only candidate for the presidency is the Swedish Johan Eliasch, who became the number 1 of the FIS 10 months ago, while there will be 23 candidates for a position as director, including the FISI President Flavio Roda who is already a current member of the International Federation. During the Congress, the location destined to host the 2027 Alpine Skiing World Championships will be chosen: in the running Crans-Montana (Switzerland), Garmisch-Partenkirchen (Germany), Narvik (Norway) and Soldeu Grandvalira (Andorra), and from this election the future of the candidacy of Val Gardena 2029 will also depend a lot, which will in fact discover the “rivals” for the next world championship, which will be awarded in May 2024.
The choice of Falun (Sweden), the only candidate for the 2027 Nordic World Ski Championships and which will follow the World Championships in Planica (2023) in Trondheim (2025), has already been taken for granted. The candidacy of snowboard and freestyle for 2027 will remain to be decided: at the moment they are certain for both Bakuriani (2023) and Sankt Moritz (2025).
In the meantime, after the rumors of the last few days regarding important changes regarding the next World Cup calendars, the general secretary of the FIS, Michel Vion, spoke clearly to the colleagues of “Ski Chrono”. "This is fake news, there is no desire to penalize the super-g", said the former president of the French federation, also referring to the possibility of giants on single heat or indoor competitions. Drafts of the calendar are expected shortly, once the work of the various technical commissions has been completed.
