World Championships 2029, next 9 September the choice at FISI between Val Gardena and Sestriere

A few more days and we will know which Italian location will try to bring the world championship event back to Italy, eight years after Cortina. The Gardena dossier: "A sustainable and innovative World Cup".

A race between Val Gardena and Sestriere, between the dream of bringing back the world championships between the Saslong and the Ciampinoi track 3, 59 years after the 1970 world championship event, and that of the Piedmontese town that hosted the world event in 1997 , with the unforgettable Italian triumphs of Deborah Compagnoni and Isolde Kostner. A challenge that, on 9 September, will see the council of the Italian Winter Sports Federation choose which candidacy to carry out at FIS for the 2029 World Alpine Skiing World Championship. Organizing sustainable races using mainly existing tracks and infrastructures is fundamental and in both cases the tradition at the level of major events and World Cup races is indisputable, with an organization of the highest quality. Since the 1960s, Val Gardena has been a fixed point in the cup calendar, with Saslong hosting the legendary speed races which, in December 2021, will take place for the 54th time. In over 50 years of history, the World Championships in 1970 were the absolute pinnacle, a milestone for Val Gardena, for Alto Adige and for Italian winter sports. Much has changed since then, but the passion and enthusiasm for top performance, which the Gardena organizing committee of the Saslong Classic Club has firmly anchored in its “Passion and Performance” mission, have remained the same after more than five decades. The vision of an Alpine Skiing World Championship in Val Gardena is supported by many people and institutions; the political leaders of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano and the three municipalities of Val Gardena support the project with great conviction. The intention is also supported by the tourism sector of Val Gardena. “However, the support of the majority of the population in Val Gardena and the territory is even more important. The population is enthusiastic about the idea of the 2029 Alpine World Ski Championships and wants to actively participate in an extraordinary international sports festival ”, says Rainer Senoner, President of the Saslong Classic Club. The races for the world title must be sustainable, which is why they would take place on existing tracks. “An innovative sporting event that gives new impulses and encourages young people to go skiing. And, last but not least, a great event that creates new jobs and stimulates local economic cycles ", explains Senoner, who, together with his team, political institutions and the population of Val Gardena, eagerly awaits the decision of the FISI of next September 9th.
