A completely new combo and a lot of races: the 2022/23 cup still with many unknowns

In just over a month, at the FIS congress in Milan, all the decisions on the calendar for next season. Work is being done on the combined ones dedicated to speed (downhill plus super-g) and those made up of the two technical disciplines, adding for example the giant in Alta Badia and the slalom in Campiglio. Super-g except, but it will be the specialty with less tests.

A lot of races (there could be more than 45, both in the men's and women's calendar), a completely new combined format and still many unknowns. Only during the FIS congress, which will confirm Johan Eliasch's presidency on May 26, will he put down on paper the calendars of the 2022/23 World Cup, but the Swedish-born tycoon himself wants an important change at several levels and committees at work have put down a draft that foresees a semi-revolution. We will have to wait over a month, but the indications are quite clear, starting from the certainty of the first two stages, or the giants of Soelden on October 22-23 followed by the great debut of Zermatt-Cervinia with the "speed opening" which will offer two descents men in the shadow of the Piccolo Cervino on 29 and 30 October, with the two women on the following weekend of 5-6 November. In recent days the news had emerged that the men's downhill in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, one of the great classics of the CdM, would no longer be making room for just one slalom (at night), but the Bavarian organization still hopes to have that race, while the women will regularly compete in the two fast tests on the “Kandahar”. Eliasch strongly wants a double North American trip, first with the now traditional November and December appointments between Killington and Lake Louise for the women's sector and always in Canada with the men who will then go to Beaver Creek, but again in the spring with the return to Lake Tahoe and Aspen. Virtually nothing should change for Italy, given that Val Gardena, Alta Badia, Campiglio and Bormio are staples of the men's calendar in the second half of December and women, in addition to the double close appointment of Cortina d''Ampezzo and Kronplatz at the end of January, they will return to Sestriere as already foreseen for some time, on 20-21 December 2022 with a giant and almost certainly a slalom (initially a parallel giant should have been played, as in January 2020) on the “Kandahar G.A. Lambs ". And here we are linked to the two great variations compared to recent years (especially those pre Covid): the parallel is no longer in the interest of the FIS and we will see it only in Lech / Zuers, in mid-November. The intention, on the other hand, is that of a decisive relaunch of the combined, but with an epochal change: the idea is to play 5 or 6 per genre and tying the fast specialties together, as well as the technical ones. Basically, descent plus super-g and assignment of points, ditto with giant and slalom, with Alta Badia and Campiglio (giant on the Gran Risa, slalom on 3Tre) combined as would be the fast races on the Saslong, the technical ones of Val d ' 'Isère and Adelboden and again DH and SG between Wengen and Kitz. For women, the same system would be used by taking advantage of the races in Killington, Sestriere, Semmering, Sankt Moritz, Sankt Anton and Cortina d''Ampezzo. The total number of races? There is talk of 13 descents, 8 super-gs (which is saved after the rumors of the last few weeks, but remains the most sacrificed discipline in numerical terms), 10 giants and 10 slalom, in addition to the parallel of Lech / Zuers and precisely the new combined , which of course would score separately in addition to those of the individual races that compose them. All to be confirmed, but the road seems to be drawn.
