Under the snow of Val di Fiemme a four-day super begins: the Nordic combined CdM is back

Today the Provisional Competition Round, from Friday the races with the new Mixed Team before the individual tests, both for men and for girls, with the blues literally at home. Problems for the men's team, explains the manager Sandro Sambugaro.

Another beautiful dusting of snow, yesterday in Val di Fiemme, so as to give even more captivating images of the Predazzo jumping stadium and the cross-country center of Lago di Tesero which, starting today and until Sunday , will be the scene of the now classic Nordic Combined World Cup event, one of the most anticipated races of the season, especially in view of the Olympics. In the Trentino valley, the attention for this discipline has always been strong, on the occasion of the three World Championships of 1991, 2003 and 2013, but above all with a calendar that for years has offered cyclical cup races between Predazzo and Lago di Tesero. . This year, before a suspension probably for the next two years due to the modernization of the two ski jumping hills ahead of the Milan-Cortina 2026 Olympics, Val di Fiemme proposes the debut in Italy of the Women's World Cup in an intriguing mix with the men's competitions, but above all for the first time in the World Cup, it will be possible to witness the awaited Mixed Team, two males and two females per nation to add up the times, after the jump in Predazzo, of the cross-country race at Lago di Tesero. For many it will be a convincing Olympic test, for some nations it will also be an opportunity to define their respective teams to be sent to Beijing. It will start this Thursday evening, starting at 5.45 pm, with the PCR (Provisional Competition Round), that is the test jump that counts as a race jump in case of inclement weather in the following days. Then from Friday we get to the heart with the awaited Mixed Team: at 10 am the jump for males and females, at 1.15 pm the cross-country race at the lake. On Saturday it will be the turn of the first men's Individual Gundersen with the jump at 9.30 and the 10 km cross-country skiing at 12.30, followed by the 5 km women's mass start at 13.30 and then in Predazzo the girls' jump at 6 pm. Sunday ends with the second Gundersen men, jump at 9.30 always on the HS106, and 10 km of cross country at 11.45. In the World Cup the Norwegian Jarl Magnus Riiber dominates undisputed with 700 points (7 wins out of 8 races) and with the Austrian Johannes Lamparter to chase (420 points). Norway is also greedy in the Cup for women, with a provisional podium made up of Gyda Westvold Hansen (500 points, unbeaten this season), Ida Marie Hagen (282) and Marte Leinan Lund (250). For Italy the situation is better for women than for men. Sixth is Annika Sieff, already able to take the first historic blue podium in CdM, and 12th Veronica Gianmoena, both from Val di Fiemme. The head of the Italian Nordic combined, Sandro Sambugaro, is forced to reckon: "For the Predazzo races we are present with the whole team as regards the male part, 6 or 7 athletes, unfortunately, with the new Covid provision that has issued by the FISI President on December 30th, Costa will not be able to be registered for the tender. I say unfortunately, because it gave us more hope as results. The problem with Buzzi was also solved in the last few hours, so we will probably compete with 6 athletes. I expect a good placement between 20-25 from Buzzi, until now I have never seen Pittin jump well and therefore I can not say anything ... For the young we see, we have no expectations, but above all Bortolas is very strong in the jump, we'll see. As for the women's combined we are more optimistic, we have three girls, two from Val di Fiemme and one from Val Gardena who unfortunately has to remain in quarantine until Thursday (we're talking about Daniela Dejori, ed), but I have reason to think that will be present in the competition with the other two; the expectations are there, I hope for a good result and a repeat of Lillehammer performances where we took home a podium. Certainly the other athletes have grown a lot, even we are not watching, I hope that Annika Sieff will be able to repeat herself and do very well ". Said di Costa with the question mark, for the Azzurri there should be Alessandro Pittin, Raffaele Buzzi, Aaron Kostner, Iacopo Bortolas, Domenico Mariotti and Stefano Radovan, then Annika Sieff, Veronica Gianmoena and, hopefully, Daniela Dejori. A period of great work for the Fiemme World Cup committee, just closed the Tour de Ski, everyone on track again with the Nordic Combined.
