The difficult weather conditions and consequently the track made the 50 km in classical Oslo-Holmenkollen technique very difficult and discouraged actions from afar. Until the last part of the race there were no real escape attempts, but Bolshunov, Dario Cologna, Niskanen and the Norwegian battleship alternated at the top of the group, which with a constant rhythm gradually put the second athletes in difficulty end. Among them, the Azzurri also lingered, closing very far from the podium positions.
The race came to life after the ski change, which took place 12 km from the finish. First Krueger and then Bolshunov raised the pace considerably, putting the leading group in line, which lost several elements in a few hundred meters. In particular, to suffer the attack of the leader of the World Cup were Martin Johnsrud Sundby, two-time winner of the 50 km of Oslo, Johannes Klæbo and Iivo Niskanen, one of the favorites of the eve.
At 3 km from the finish it was Krueger again to try to escape, but on his tails remained the most dangerous opponent, Alexander Bolshunov. In the uphill sections, the Norwegian tried to detach his rival in all ways, after resisting, in the sprint he unleashed all the horses, winning the second success in the Oslo-Holmenkollen temple. Third position for Emil Iversen.
