As expected, the FIS decided today to extend the exclusion of Russia and Belarus in the competitions of the winter disciplines, maintaining the position taken in response to the Russian invasion in Ukraine.
Consequently, the athletes of their respective nations will not be able to participate in the new 2022-2023 season, which is now upon us. A choice that goes hand in hand with the IBU and brings to its knees among the many sports, especially cross-country skiing in which the Nordic nations had already leaked that they would not allow the participation of Russian cross-country skiers in their CdM stages in Finland , Sweden and Norway.
So the various Alexander Bolshunov, Denis Spitsov, Ivan Yakimushkin, Natalia Nepryava champion of the CdM, Yulia Stupak and Veronika Stepanova, very active in defense of her country, will have to do without a World Cup that in recent years have seen them protagonists.
In reply, Elena Vjalbe criticizes the position of the Scandinavian countries for the fury of the media, especially against cross-country skiers rather than biathletes and skiers. It is said she is not surprised by the decision taken by the FIS noting that in Russia they already have their own cup and national calendar of competitions scheduled every weekend as reported by the colleagues of Ski Nordique.
