The Finn was the dominator of Ski Jumping in the mid-eighties and remains among the largest if not the greatest of all time.

In the night between Sunday and Monday, the Finnish jumper Matti Nykänen suddenly died at the age of 55. The causes of death have not yet been spread; in health until last autumn, the aftermath of a jet crash revealed a serious form of diabetes as reported by Sieska, the Finnish information site that first broke the news.
Born on July 17, 1963 in Jyväskylä, a city of central Finland, Matti Nykänen made his debut in the World Cup not yet eighteen, winning the first podium at the highest level of his bright career in Lahti's Large Hill. obtained the still unbeaten record of Olympic medals. While in Sarajevo in 1984 he conquered the 'Gold in Large Hill and the' Silver in Normal Hill where he was preceded by the East German Jens Weissflog, in Calgary 1988 he succeeded for the first time in history (thanks to the introduction in that edition of trial teams) the conquest of three gold medals in the same edition, an event that has not been repeated. With his 4 gold and 1 silver medals, Nykänen is the only jumper to have won five Olympic medals and in the company of the Swiss Simon Ammann with 4 gold medals. With the Swiss who has succeeded in the company twice and with Kamil Stoch, the Finn is the only (and was the first) to have in the same edition won the Olympic title on both trampolni.
To the Olympic glories, nine world medals are added to the World Jumping Championships with five titles (one of them individual) and five medals, with one Gold, at the World Championships in flight, to which are added four World Cups and the victory in two editions of the Tourneè dei Quattro Trampolini: these successes make him the only jumper able to win (individually) in his career at least one Olympic Gold, a Jumping World Championship, a Flying World Championship, a World Cup and a Tourneè of the Four Trampolines.
Genius and unruliness, after retiring with the World Championships in 1991, he devoted himself with alternate successes to his career as a pop star and his life plagued by problems of alcoholism met in at least a couple of occasions the courts even spending almost a year in prison .
