Italian ski jumping in mourning: Giacomo Aimoni, a symbol of the sport, dies at 86

A competitor at the 1964 Innsbruck Olympic Games and then at Grenoble 1968, he was one of the pioneers of Italian ski jumping. His funeral will be held this afternoon in Ponte di Legno.

The ski jumping world is mourning the death of Giacomo Aimoni, aged 86, one of the pioneers of the discipline in Italy.

Born in 1939, he competed at the 1964 Innsbruck Olympic Games at the age of 24, finishing 28th on the normal hill and 13th on the Austrian Large Hill. He also took part in the 1968 Grenoble Olympics, finishing 25th and 16th. During his career, he won two Italian titles.

Aimoni’s funeral will be held today in Ponte di Legno at 2:30 p.m. at the parish church. We join the Italian Winter Sports Federation and President Flavio Roda in extending our deepest condolences to his wife Bruna, daughters Sara and Silvia, grandchildren Marco and Nicola, and sister Liliana.
