The use of nebulizers for administration of anti-asthmatic by the Norwegian team would not be limited to the senior squad: the same practice was in fact adopted at the World Under-23 and Junior Rasnov, in February. On this occasion, to make use of the drugs in question would have been even athletes to which the disease has never been diagnosed.

The news, reported today by NRK, has found confirmation of Petter Olberg, one of the doctors in the wake of the national team in Romania.
"Our policy is to treat both asthma and those we call asthma symptoms, ie reactions of the respiratory system that produce symptoms similar to asthma," says Olberg.
The doctor refused on suspicion of administering drugs to healthy athletes: "I do not think you can say such a thing. If we take care of someone, it is because it is not well. They are athletes who have symptoms and are seeking my help. Some had problems that were treated. Others do not, and in fact have not been cured. To say that they were healthy is completely wrong: a healthy person does not have those symptoms. "
Even the widespread use of the term "gray area" is particularly well regarded by Dr. Olberg: "I see no gray area. We try to treat the most of both those suffering from chronic respiratory diseases, both those who have transient disturbances. "
Olberg has, however, admitted that the use of the nebulizer may give rise to controversy: "We were dubious about its use. Many kids they had never used. However, when problems arose, we were happy to have brought you need. The vast majority of sick athletes benefited from the use of the nebulizer. "
The reason for the massive recourse to treatment would be found in the conditions encountered in the Romanian mountain resort: "In Rasnov there was a very particular climate, with high amounts of carbon monoxide. From the second or third day, a part of our athletes began to suffer problems. Some have improved without the need for treatment, but others have needed specific processes ".
The procedure would still not be applied regularly at youth level, unlike what happens in the national team.
According Olberg, interested athletes would be "a significant proportion" of the total, "not all."
The doctor has also penetrated in the care details: "At first we used the Pulmicort, which is a drug typically used in the prevention of asthma. Some have even used the Atrovent. A good part then needed salt solutions. The nebulizer was used both for the latter, both for Pulmicort ".
The treatment took place in a special room, separate from the building in which the athletes were staying.
It does not take long to arrive the Swedish reply, headed by Per Andersson, head of the national medical staff. While admitting that the air Rasnov has created more of a difficulty even for athletes in Sweden, Andersson reiterated its difference of opinion with respect to the Norwegian colleagues, expressed a few days ago: "Despite the systems used by the Norwegians are no prohibitions, we we have other policies: who received a diagnosis of asthma take medication; if not, we do not administer medication against asthma who competes in the junior categories. And anyway, we never use the nebulizer. We do not believe it is proper practice to elite athletes, if anything, is placed to emergency cases. There are also ethical and moral implications. "
For Andersson, at least in terms of nebulizers, it is also aligned Torgeir Bjørn, expert in cross-country skiing in the same NRK.
