Unlike what happened in the women's race, the first part was very tactical and the group arrived compact at the foot of the final climb. Behind Ustiugov he tried to detach Bolshunov to go and get the Tour de Ski. After responding brilliantly to the attack, the young Russian increased his pace again, detaching his teammate.
