Riale, in the upper Val Formazza, is a cradle of cross-country skiing in Piedmont and beyond, ready to be tinged with blue for a special weekend.
On the weekend of 4-5 June, this location will host the gathering of former athletes of the Italian Nordic skiing team, from cross-country to biathlon up to jumping and combined. The initiative is of the Club Azzurro, a sort of Rotary of Sport which includes over 100 Italian athletes who have participated in the Olympics or World Championships and have left the business.
Kings and queens of sport who mostly come from Piedmont, Lombardy, Valle d'Aosta, Emilia-Romagna. To unite them, the passion for sport and the memories of the successes achieved, for some still very fresh. In fact, the Club includes 25-year-olds who have recently left the national team, as long-time champions today in their seventies. This year everyone is called to meet again in Val Formazza, to reconnect ancient partnerships in two days of celebration and also to remember the comrades who are no longer there.
The biennial event lands in Riale after missing the 2020 edition due to the pandemic. The athletes will be hosted at the Aalts Dorf hotel restaurant, with the Cross-country skiing center adjoining the track where international competitions dedicated to the discipline are held. Both structures are managed by Gianluca Barp, President of Formazza Event. Val Formazza was chosen for its sporting traditions and its look to the future, with initiatives aimed at champions and enthusiasts of all disciplines who can find here an ideal place for skiing and more generally for training at high altitude.
In Riale are expected, among others, Giulio Capitanio, former cross-country skier and the first Italian athlete to win in the World Cup and who won 11 medals at the Italian championships, Fabio Maj, who won two medals at the Olympic Games (Nagano 1998 and Salt Lake City 2002) and as many at the World Cup. Also present will be the President of the Blue Club that promotes and organizes the events, the Friulian Gabriella Paruzzi, winner of the gold medal in the 30 km TC at the 2002 Salt Lake City Games, as well as the 2004 World Cup, as well as the regional coordinator in Piedmont, Adriano Darioli, a former biathlete who won 6 medals at the Italian championships, two of which gold.
