Bad news for women's cross-country skiing. Two of the most accredited protagonists of the crystal ball race will begin the handicap season, a smooth road to victory for Therese Johaug?

Bad news came from Scandinavia between yesterday and today: the crystal ball holder Ingvild Flugstad Østberg and the talented Ebba Andersson have given up on international competitions scheduled for the next two weeks - including the opening of the maximum circuit at Ruka -, but it is not yet clear when they will be able to return to compete and above all doing it at the level that is right for them.
The Swede in particular could even skip all the World Cup competitions next month and at the moment her presence at the Tour de Ski that will start from Lanzerheide on Saturday 28th December is also at great risk. The cause of this long stop would lie in a crash occurred during a race in Bruksvallarna's retirement, in the episode a knee would have suffered an abnormal twist causing a relapse of an injury passed for some time.
The reasons that led Østeberg to raise the white flag in view of Ruka's Nordic Opening are less clear: from the statements made at a press conference it was leaked that the Norwegian would not meet the minimum requirements for the issuance of the medical certificate. At the moment we have no more detailed information on the subject, but the impression is that one of the great protagonists of the past season may conceal the problem of so-called overtraining.
Outside the games Andersson and Østberg, the impression is that now the road to success for Therese Johaug is increasingly free.
