The two races held in the canton of Grisons over the past weekend closed the first cycle of stages prior to the Tour de Ski, which will start on December 31st from Val Mustair. The stage of the cross-country skiing CdM in Davos gave numerous emotions to the world of winter sports, saying goodbye in the best possible way while waiting for the first major event of the season: the Tour de Ski 2023.
For Italy, in a stratospheric weekend for most of the winter sports disciplines, the moment of joy arrived on Saturday in the early afternoon, when Federico Pellegrino, in doubt until a few hours before the start due to the imminent birth of his son , triumphed in the skating sprint (4th success in Davos career), beating the Martian Johannes Klaebo in the sprint, something that hadn't happened since 3 March 2018 (Pellegrino's victory in Lahti with Klaebo 3rd). The various side dishes made the triumph of ''Chicco'' heroic: in an Instagram story of the Aosta Valley champion his routine appeared to get to Davos in time for the race, with a start from home (Nus) which took place at 3:30 at night, to be in the Swiss resort in the morning, also driven by the enthusiasm of his wife Greta Laurent.
On Sunday in the 20 km TL Norway confirmed its supremacy in the men's field in the distance races, placing three athletes on the podium, with Simen Krueger winning ahead of Hans Holund and Sjur Roethe.
Klaebo therefore fails to take advantage of Golberg's absence to take back the yellow bib: the general classification now reads Paal Golberg 1st with 756 points, followed precisely by Klaebo at 617 points, a great momentary 3rd place for Federico Pellegrino, which reached 500 points. He also excels in the distance classification Golberg, with 481 points, twenty-six ahead of his compatriot Hans Holuned. Johannes Klaebo loses the leadershio in the sprint standings, ousted by his compatriot Even Northug by just three points (340 against 337).
For the home crowd, the best part of the weekend was the women's sprint final, with Nadine Faehndrich bringing Switzerland back to the top step of the podium in Davos after almost sixteen years (February 3, 2007, victory for Toni Livers in the 15 km TL ). The great moment of form continues for the twenty-seven-year-old Swiss, with her second consecutive success after Beitostolen.
The 20 km skating saw the United States as protagonists, with an excellent Jessie Diggins, already second in Saturday's sprint, winner in front of a revived Ingvild Oestberg, on the podium after almost three seasons and many injuries, and her compatriot Rosie Brennan , to the first podium of the season.
The Norwegian Tiril Weng is confirmed as yellow bib, who collected two very good fourth places, with 872 points, followed by Jessie Diggins with 738 points; Temporary 3rd place for the Finnish Krista Parmakoski (625). Anne Klavaa takes the lead in the distance classification with 492 points, two more than Tiril Weng, who leads the sprint classification with 382 points, +22 on the Swede Johanna Hagstroem. The dish is crying in Italy, with Caterina Ganz thirty-second in the general standings with 223 points; in this stage no blue reached the top 20.
The cross-country skiing CdM takes almost two weeks off, to return to the scene on 31 December 2022, with the inaugural sprint of the Tour de Ski, scheduled on the Swiss snow of Val Mustair.
