“I really like being in Livigno, it's the third time I've come back, the first in 2022, after I came on two separate occasions last year. A magnificent location, where it is easy to train on roller skis, the weather is stable, and where everything is very functional for the athlete. Livigno is really the perfect place to do altitude training, and I'm happy to be here ”.
Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo, Norwegian cross-country skiing phenomenon, inaugurates the winter season in Livigno, attending the opening of the ring, scheduled for Friday 28 October. As is now customary, therefore, also this year the "Little Tibet" will welcome the first training on the snow of numerous international champions, starting with the five-time Olympic champion, Sprint specialist, who will stop on site to nearly four weeks.
Thanks to its climatic and environmental uniqueness, Livigno confirms itself as a European reference point for altitude training, with an increasingly important list of athletes and federations who choose it to complete their training. Excellence also certified by the recent investiture by CONI, which has made the town an Olympic Preparation Center.
Carlo Mornati, Secretary General and Head of the Sports Office, recently commented: “Training at high altitude is a topic that we have been pursuing for some time. We started in 2013 and with the Livigno Olympic Preparation Center we have achieved our goal. There are many federations that organize altitude training: we are happy to be able to offer, now, the opportunity to go to Livigno. Here we can concentrate all the summer federations, considering that the winter ones are already at home. We also want to bring us a medical-scientific unit, a small cell of the Institute, because we need disclosure, knowledge and data collection.
Livigno is a unique center in the world that can host all disciplines, and its climatic variety is crucial: every detail makes the difference ".
Details that make the difference, like that, another uniqueness, of Snowfarming, the snow collection technique that allows you to build a ring already in the middle of autumn. The practice first foresees the collection, between March and April, of about 80,000 cubic meters of snow, which is then stored in the central plain, the heart of the cross-country track. Here, the mountain of snow is covered by a layer of wood fiber and a geothermal sheet, which respectively protect it from the summer air and from the sun's rays. By doing so, the snow remains at rest for the summer months, with an estimated loss of 20% maximum, ready for the August appointments, the Gara delle Contrade and the 1kShot, and for the ring at the end of October.
All of this, obviously, with an eye to sustainability, one of the most relevant issues for the future of this sport which, as Klaebo himself admits, will have to face new challenges: "Cross-country skiing is experiencing a particular period: one of the challenges of the future will be that of the lack of snow in various locations. I will do everything in my power to pay attention to this sport. Traveling a lot and visiting many places, you can see how many people are in love with cross-country skiing. We must continue to have the right thoughts ”.
The opening of the ski lifts is scheduled for Saturday 3 December: if winter is coming, in Livigno there is already a knock on the door.
