After Therese Johaug's success in the inaugural women's skiathlon of the Beijing 2022 Olympic Games, it is now the turn of the men's cross-country skiing sector. Tomorrow, Sunday 6 February, at 3 pm local time (8 Italian) the 30 km (15 km + 15 km) men's skiathlon will start; great anticipation to see how the athletes will manage to juggle the challenging Zhangjiakou track.
Bib number one will be on the shoulders of the ruler of the current World Cup season, the norge Johannes Klaebo, in search of the second individual Olympic gold in the career. The main rival for Klaebo will undoubtedly be the Russian Alexander Bolshunov, reigning world champion in this competition format, but to keep an eye on the other Russian athletes in the competition, namely: Alexey Chervotkin (3), Artem maltsev (5) and Denis Spitsov (6). Possible role of outsiders also for the Finnish Iivo Niskanen (number 4); among the favorites for a medal, the Norwegian Hans Christer Holund (8), bronze at Pyeonchang 2018, cannot fail to be included.
The reigning Olympic champion, Simen Krueger, who would undoubtedly have been one of the favorites for the victory also in this edition of the Games, stopped by Covid. The Swiss veteran Dario Cologna, on the other hand, has given up, preferring to preserve his energy for the other races of the Olympic program.
Italy will try to play its cards, focusing on the Aosta Valley Francesco De Fabiani, who will be at the start with bib number 11; a medal would be a real undertaking, but dreaming costs nothing and surprises, given the conditions of the race, could be on the agenda. The other two Azzurri in the race will be Giandomenico salvadori, number 31, and Paolo Ventura, number 36.
So the appointment is for tomorrow at 8 am in Italy, to see who will be the first Olympic champion in cross-country skiing at the Beijing 2022 Olympic Games.
