Cross-country skiing: here are all the news about Falun's mixed relay and mixed sprint team

From the FIS autumn congress on cross-country skiing, held yesterday, several details emerged on the mixed race formats that will debut in the new season.

Yesterday (1 October) the FIS congress on autumn cross-country skiing took place. Among the many topics dealt with, the one dealt with the most attention was that relating to the new race formats which, during the season that is about to begin, will make their debut in March 2022 in the Swedish stage of Falun. Both mixed events will be in free technique and only one team per nation will be admitted to each competition. In the mixed sprint team the test will start with the qualifying heat, where each athlete will individually ski a lap with an interval start. The twenty best couples will emerge from the sum of the times between the male athlete and the female athlete, who will qualify for the final. In the final, each athlete will cover six laps (the female cross-country skier will start and will alternate after one lap with the male cross-country skier); every two rounds (2-4-6-8-10) the last two pairs will be eliminated. No physical contact is required to make the switch between the two athletes. As for the mixed relay, each athlete will have to run a lap of 5 km; the first fraction will be played by a woman athlete, the two central ones by two male athletes, while the final fraction will be played by a woman athlete.
