The sad events of the last few hours, with the conflict between Russia and Ukraine that is getting more and more alive, affect and will also affect the sporting events that revolve around these two countries. The Ukrainian football championship was inevitably suspended, the Champions League final scheduled in St. Petersburg is in danger of changing; even cross-country skiing risks being involved in this black page of history.
In the World Cup calendar, the finals would be scheduled in Tyumen, a Russian town located in the Siberian part, from 18 to 20 March 2022. Cross-country skiing would return to Russia after more than seven years (the last time it competed in Rybinsk in January 2015), but the worsening of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine also risks jeopardizing the conduct of sporting events on Russian territory.
The official decision by the FIS has not yet arrived, although for several weeks a plan B has already been worked on. The Norwegian federation has declared that it is inadmissible that Russia can organize sports competitions; Christer Holund is also of the same opinion, strongly opposed to the Tyumen stage.
According to director Ola Stroemberg, the Swedish federation has already ordered the town of Oestersund to host the cross-country skiing World Cup finals, replacing Tyumen. Oestersund already hosted the Biathlon World Cup finals during the scrosa season, replacing Lillehammer due to anti-Covid restrictions. The Swedish location, therefore, would be ready to take charge of the finals should the FIS decide to remove them from Tyumen. the situation is constantly evolving, the next few days and weeks will be decisive for understanding where the 2021/2022 Cross-Country Skiing World Cup will end.
