One of the pioneers of the movement passed away in Moena, where he lived and today there will be the funeral: three participations in the Olympics and now his grandson's dream for Milan-Cortina 2026.

Ottavio Compagnoni passed away on Wednesday at the age of 95, which he had just completed a few days ago, or on 11 September. We are talking about a myth of blue cross-country skiing, a true point of reference for the whole movement with his family; born in Santa Caterina Valfurva in 1926, Compagnoni was the last of eight brothers, two of whom bronze in relay at the 1939 World Cup. It lived its moment of maximum splendor in the fifties, when it represented Italy in three consecutive editions of the Winter Olympic Games: Oslo 1952, Cortina 1956 (with its best result ever, the 5th place with the relay ) and Squaw Valley 1960. Two participations in the world championships, between Falun 1954 and Lahti 1958 with another two fifth places in the relay, and eight national titles won. Only a few weeks ago, Compagnoni had met Federico Pellegrino: a birthday present, as Ottavio wanted to chat with the current reference point of the Italian fund, with whom he not only shared the suit of the national team but also that of the group of belonging, the Fiamme Oro. And in that reality there is also the story of his nephew Giovanni Ticcò, 21 years old who is part of the blue project of “Milan-Cortina 2026”, with the dream that his heir could also participate in the home Olympics. Ottavio Compagnoni left his sons Alberto and Donatella, the funeral will take place at the Parish Church of Moena, where he had lived for many years, today at 2 pm.
