Cross-country skiing: from 6 to 8 January 2023, the most awaited event of the year in Italy with the usual closure on the Cermis. Meanwhile, Livigno is preparing the track which will host the historic sprints in Valtellina over the weekend of 21-22 January.

During the last World Cup weekend, Italy had its fill of great results in all winter disciplines, including cross-country skiing with Federico Pellegrino's feat in the free technique Sprint in Davos. The 17th Tour de Ski will start from Switzerland, more precisely in Val Muestair, on 31 December, and will then find a sweet epilogue in Val di Fiemme with the last stage from 6 to 8 January 2023.
If Pellegrino arrives in great shape and confidence at the central appointment of the winter, the American Jessie Diggins has launched positive signals, queen of the Tour de Ski in 2021 and third in 2018: after the second place in the Davos Sprint won by the landlady Nadine Faehndrich, the stars and stripes champion managed to conquer the 20 km in skating, thus becoming the most successful US cross-country skier in the World Cup.
The newfound Francesca Franchi (23rd) was the best among the Italians, while Caterina Ganz from Val di Fassa stayed at home due to a strong cold, but admitted that she wanted to prepare the Tour de Ski in the best possible way: "I care a lot and I'm super curious about know how I'll fare in the three Fiemme stages - the words of the blue - I really like the track at the Lago di Tesero Cross-Country Centre. The 15 km classic is definitely a race suited to my characteristics, but I'll try to do well in the Sprint and in the legendary Final Climb as well.
Although the Russians are missing, the level this year in the World Cup is very high”.
In the meantime, in Val di Fiemme, the Fiemme World Cup committee is working quickly on the triptych of Sprint, Mass Start 15 km and Final Climb races, which will be accompanied by suggestive side events: the Coop Mini World Cup will start on Saturday 7 January at 10.00 am, the promotional gymkhana on the slopes of the Centro del Fondo di Lago di Tesero open to children born between 2011 and 2017, while in the evening at 7.30 pm you can eat, drink and dance at the Winterfest in the party tent with the young group from Fiemme "Fleimstaler ” to perform on stage. The "Rampa con i Campioni" on Sunday will be the icing on the cake: experiencing three days of the World Cup is already something unique in itself, and having the opportunity to see past champions up close overcomes any expectation.
At 9.00 in the morning the athletes will "climb" along the steep slopes of the Olimpia III alpine ski slope, the same route as the Final Climb. Last season the podium of the "Rampa" was all foreign with the Olympic and world champion Alexander Legkov (already winner of the Rampa in 2019 and 2020) and the Spanish Marta Cester in first place, awarded shortly before the arrival of the big names from World Cup. Registration for the 12th edition of the Rampa con i Campioni is open, all participants will be awarded with a finisher medal and the first three classified in the male and female category will have the honor of standing on the podium of the Tour de Ski at the end of the race.
Furthermore, the public along the Cermis slope will be able to complete a Tour... of Taste, savoring Trentino specialties from sweet to savory. The passion for the World Cup events in Valle di Fiemme involves volunteers of all ages: all together, starting from the sixteen-year-old Diego Vanzo of Ziano di Fiemme (in charge of TV wiring) up to the more expert Giuliano Vaia of 83 years of Tesero (in charge of the safety service of the Centro del Fondo di Lago di Tesero), they form a great team, indeed a great family. After Christmas and the New Year's celebrations concluded, it is therefore time for Tour de Ski in Val di Fiemme on the Olympic and world slopes of the Lago di Tesero Cross-Country Center and on the mythical ascent of Alpe del Cermis.
LIVIGNO “SEES” THE CUP
In the meantime, with the beginning of the works for the construction of the track which, one month from now, will host the first stage of the cross-country skiing World Cup in the history of Livigno, the countdown has officially come alive in “Little Tibet”.
A highly anticipated double appointment, set for the weekend of 21 and 22 January, which will see the best athletes and the best national teams in the world compete in two Sprint races, in a weekend that could prove to be important also in terms of awarding crystal balls. A very snowy Livigno is therefore preparing to host the strongest interpreters of the specialty, who will begin to reach the resort as early as January 9th. Among the top names, the sure presence of the two most eagerly awaited men, Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo and Federico Pellegrino, should be noted, who will experience two very special races in Livigno given that both, over the seasons, have spent long periods of preparation in the Valtellina locality.
A lot of irons in the fire, therefore, for an appointment that promises to be truly unmissable, both from a technical point of view and from a context and scenic beauty. Under the direction of the FISI, the World Cup weekend will open with the individual sprint test in free technique, scheduled for Saturday 21st, which will be followed the following day by the Team Sprint (also skating). Public who will be able to access the event for free, to enjoy a unique show and to support the best athletes in the world along the entire track.
