The overture is an orchestral piece that artists usually perform with the curtain closed before the beginning of an opera, almost always introducing a great musical composition. On Saturday 4th December Livigno proposes the classic overture on the snow, this time the "curtain" will be open, vast, fascinating: Little Tibet, which in early December is usually already well whitewashed, will stage the 31st edition of the Sgambeda.
It will be ... an Italian symphony, it will represent as always the season opening for long distance cross-country skiing and in fact the organizers put the event on the track one month after the opening of the ring fund, created as has been happening for years thanks to snow-farming. A track that many leading athletes, Italians and especially foreigners, have booked for the last training sessions at high altitude before the start of the World Cup. La Sgambeda returns to tradition, first weekend in December, 35 km free technique with start and finish near the center of Livigno, using all the facilities of the Livigno Cross-Country Center.
This edition, after the stop imposed by Covid last season, is highly anticipated by enthusiasts who, at that time, usually take their skis off the attic for a first weekend that knows how to return to the track with a "ride" on the snow in the midst of nature. . Waiting to understand whether or not there will be restrictions, the organizers announce a limited edition edition, 500 admitted starting from September 1st, when in practice the cross-country skiers have in mind what the future commitments of the season will be. La Sgambeda is dedicated above all to amateurs, lovers of free technique or skating as they say in cross-country jargon, but the competition has often enhanced the exploits of great champions who over the years have chosen Livigno to prepare the most important feats.
In 1990 the first to write his name in the roll of honor was the "Grillo" Maurilio De Zolt, imitated in the female form by another great athlete, Guidina Dal Sasso. Since then Sgambeda and Livigno have talked about extraordinary feats also with Gaudenzio Godioz, Silvano Barco, Michael Botvinov, and then in the years Gianantonio Zanetel, Marco Cattaneo and in more recent times the Norwegian ace Petter Northug, just to name a few. The registration fee until 31 October amounts to 50 euros, then until 1 December it will rise to 60 euros. Five categories based on age, 18/30, 31/40, 41/50, 51/60 and finally over 60, and for the first five males and females a very attractive prize pool. It should be remembered that at 500, registrations will be frozen: better hurry, it could get ... cold very quickly.
