The opening of the World Cup gives a bitter end to the Italians.

In Salt Lake City, in fact, Martina Valcepina and Arianna Fontana were again highly anticipated in the second race on the 500 meters, which 24 hours before had seen the 27 year old Valtellina get the fourth consecutive success in the specialty.
Valcepina, however, fell in the final on the most beautiful, when she was right in a brawl with Kim Boutin, the Canadian champion who then imposed herself in an extraordinary day for her, having signed the world record in the quarter-finals. On the podium also the Chinese Qu Chunyu and the Dutch Lara Van Ruijven, while Arianna Fontana herself could not take part in the final; the Olympic champion, in fact, paid the consequences of another fall, the one that involved her in the semifinals when the clash with the Polish Maliszewska, then disqualified, had taken her out of the games before the readmission to the final act, which however the Azzurri champion did not play.
"I didn't know what to expect from this return - Arianna confessed to the ISU Short Track microphones - One thing is to train, another to compete with the opponents, but these two stages of the World Cup will help me to understand at what level of preparation I am â€. The next appointment, in fact, is already set for the weekend of November 8-10 in Montreal.
To close, on the final day of the Salt Lake City stage, the Chinese Wu Dajing on the men's 500, the South Korean Hwang Dae Heon on the men's 1000 (with a great Viktor An second) rejoiced, while the 1000 women saw the imposing Dutch Suzanne Schulting, with the blue Cynthia Maschitto who failed to enter the final A, closing in fifth place in the B.
Finally the relay races with the triumphs of China and Russia, while Italy in the women's race placed fourth in the final B, after having failed to qualify for the A final in the previous evening.
