Over the weekend that has just ended, the Short Track World Cup opened in Beijing, an event in four stages that will determine the qualifications for the Olympics.

The undoubted protagonist in an Italian key was Arianna Fontana, second in the final of the 500 meters behind the Polish Maliszewska in a troubled race after the restart due to a fall of Martina Valcepina, fifth at the finish. For the thirty-one year old from Valtellina who also went to the final in the 1000 meters, finishing in fourth position in the test won by the Dutch Suzanne Schulting, this was the thirty-seventh podium in her career, fourteen years and eight months after the first one won in February 2007.
As in all Olympic seasons, particular attention is paid to the relays as their qualification for the Games allows the registration of 5 skaters to the Olympics. In this perspective, there will be 8 relays in contention, the second Italian podium of this stage is of particular importance, obtained, with third place, by Andrea Cassinelli, Pietro Sighel, Tommaso Dotti and Yuri Confortola behind Holland and Hungary. Final qualification and fourth place for a fall in the women's field by Fontana, Martina Valcepina, Arianna Valcepina.
In the Mixed Relay, new Olympic discipline in Beijing, another qualification in the final and fourth place for Cassinelli, Fontana, Sighel and Martina Valcepina.
The next appointment with the World Cup is scheduled from Thursday 28 to Sunday 31 October in Nagoya
