It is Pietro Sighel's day at the European short track championships in Gdansk. The 21-year-old from Trentino of the Fiamme Gialle signs the exploit and takes the cover on the second day of the continental review in Poland, winning a splendid silver medal on the 500 meters.
Pietro - son of Roberto Sighel, blue champion of the long track with five world medals in the palmares - has passed the quarter-finals and the semifinals, placing himself second in final A, behind only the Russian Ivliev. In the previous round, among other things, the young blue had set the Italian distance record, reaching the finish line in 40 ”735. For him at the moment 21 points and fifth position in the overall standings. An enormous satisfaction for Sighel who up to now in his career had collected a bronze in the 500 and 1500 of the Junior World Championships of the 2018-19 season.
Italy thus returns to win a medal in the men's individual of a European eight years after Confortola's bronze in the 1500 meters of the 2013 edition in Sweden. But there is great joy in the Italian home also for the qualification of both relays in Final A. The women's quartet formed by Martina Valcepina (Fiamme Gialle), Cynthia Mascitto (Skating Club Courmayeur), Gloria Ioriatti (Fiamme Oro) and Arianna Sighel (Fiamme Oro) in fact finished in second place in the semifinals behind only the Netherlands.
Same path for the men's team made up of Sighel, Andrea Cassinelli (Fiamme Gialle), Yuri Confortola (Carabinieri) and Luca Spechenhauser (Carabinieri), second in the semifinal and therefore in the race on Sunday for a medal.
