Russia dominates the first stage of the Skeleton World Cup

The Skeleton World Cup opened in the sign of Russia. In Sigulda on a new track for most of the contenders were Nikita Tregubov and Elena Nikitina, two athletes who started taking their first steps in the skeleton right on the gut.

In the men's race the Russian, Olympic silver at Pyeongchang 2018, surprisingly got the better of the highly favored Martins Dukurs, detaching the Baltic phenomenon by 37 cents. An unimaginable result on the eve of the first race of the season, especially considering that Dukurs not only knows every millimeter of the Sigulda track and that it constantly uses it to test its materials, but also because Tregubov had never won a World Cup race. Yet the Russian managed to debunk the taboo of successes playing a solid race signing in both heats scheduled the best timekeeping and also set the new record of the Baltic gut. The podium was completed by the Olympic champion Sungbin Yun, third to 53 cents from the winner, who mocked just 2 cents the veteran Alexander Tretiakov. Excellent performance for the young German debutant Felix Keisinger who finished fifth, ahead of the Dukurs brothers' major, Tomass. In the women's field, in absentia of the British Laura Deas and the Austrian Janine Flock, the Russian Elena Nikitina has ruled that thanks to the excellent pushing times she managed to get the better of the Canadian Elisabeth Vathje (+0.30) became in the course of the summer Madame Maier, and on the German Tina Hermann (+0.48). Only fifth place for the dominator of last season, Jacqueline Loelling, which was also preceded by the other Canadian Jane Channel. In both races no Italian athlete has started, as the Federation has decided to restart the skeleton movement from the Intercontinental Cup and the European Cup. In the cadet circuit at Koenigssee the national team has collected as best result two ninth places with Valentina Margaglio among the girls, while among the boys the best of the Italians was Manuel Schwaerzer 14th in race 1 and 13th in race 2. The next round of the skeleton series is scheduled for the next weekend on the Winterberg track in Germany.
