The first race of the 2020 sledding World Cup calendar year gives Italy great satisfaction. On the difficult Altenberg track, the national team led by Technical Director Armin Zoeggeler has conquered 3 podium placements out of 4 races, also strengthening its leadership in the relay rankings.

The weekend of Saxony opened immediately with a smile for the Italian colors, thanks to the second place of Dominik Fischnaller who managed to reach the podium for the third time this season. The 26-year-old bearer of the Carabinieri Sports Group played a very solid test, thanks to a brilliant first descent that allowed him to put another placement in the top-three in the freezer. In the final heat, the South Tyrolean was not extremely clean, finishing with the fifth part-time, but thanks to the mistakes of others, he was still able to save his position of honor and to store another splendid result.
A constancy of performance that the top athlete of the Italian national team has not shown since the 2013-14 Olympic season and that is keeping him in full swing for the Crystal Ball. Fischnaller, in fact, is currently in third position at 116 lengths of delay from the Russian Repilov who in Altenberg has recovered only a tenth place, and is preceded by 35 points by the Austrian Jonas Mueller, thirty-second in Saxony.
The men's race in Altenberg was literally dominated by the Austrian David Gleirscher who after the surprising Olympic gold of Pyeongchang 2018 achieved his first triumph in the World Cup circuit. The red and white has detached the Fischnaller by 233 thousandths and a Felix Loch by 270 thousandths in full experimentation with new technical solutions in view of the World Championships in Sochi, his true seasonal goal.
Fourth position for Latvian Kristers Aparjods who preceded an opaque Semen Pavlichenko. Undertone test for Kevin Fischnaller seventeenth, while the other two young blues in the race, Leon Felderer and Lukas Gufler, came respectively in thirtieth and thirty-first position.
The second blue podium of the weekend came in the women's event, where Andrea Voetter finally managed to complete two perfect heats taking third place, her best career result. The South Tyrolean who had already made great progress at the beginning of the season, closed the first descent in fifth place, and then in the final run he overcame two places by closing behind the German Julia Taubitz, at the third seal of the season, and to veteran Tatyana Ivanova who maintained the leadership of the general classification with just 2 points of margin on the winner of Altenberg.
Race to forget instead for the American Emily Sweeney who has not scored points, losing a lot of ground in the fight against the Crystal Ball. Fourteenth, fifteenth and twenty-second positions for the other three blue at the start, the young Verena Hofer, Marion Oberhofer and the art daughter Nina Zoeggeler.
The third great satisfaction for the Italian colors came from the team test that ended the German weekend. The team formed by Andrea Voetter, Dominik Fischnaller, and the duo Emanuel Rieder-Simon Kainzwaldner placed third in 103 thousandths of the top. The blue trio was preceded only by Germany and Russia, who engaged in a splendid fight on the thread of the thousandths that rewarded the team led by Albert Demchenko of just 13 thousandths. The third place however allowed Italy, winner at the beginning of the season at Igls, to continue to lead the ranking reserved for the relay.
Among the doubles, peremptory success for the Austrians Steu-Koeller who trimmed as much as 228 thousandths to the Germans Toni Eggert-Sascha Benecken and 281 to the surprising Russians Denisev-Antonov, who in the second run recovered the beauty of seven positions. Good fifth place and best career result for the Blues Rieder-Kainzwaldner who after the brilliant third half of the first descent were unable to repeat themselves. Disappointing race for the Bavarian Wendl-Artl only sevenths, who see their detachment lengthen from their rivals Eggert-Benecken in the general classification. The gap between the two German partnerships has now risen to 84 lengths.
Try decidedly subdued for the other two double blues. Rieder-Rastner closed in an anonymous fourteenth position, while the young Nagler-Malleier finished in nineteenth place.
The next appointment with the sledding World Cup is scheduled in a week on the Lillehammer track, a location that could give further satisfaction to the Italian colors.
