The first racing weekend of 2021 opened immediately with a bang. In fact, in the double, there was a splendid duel between the German associations Wendl-Arlt and Eggert-Benecken which was resolved only in the second descent in favor of the latter. The double of Thuringia, second at the end of the first run, became the protagonist of a perfect final heat that allowed him to beat the "bitter" rivals by 141 thousandths, conquering the third victory of the season and above all bypassing Wendl-Arlt in the special ranking of double multiple victors in the World Cup. With yesterday's success, the forty-sixth of their careers, Toni Eggert and Sascha Benecken become the double most successful ever in the top luge circuit, surpassing Wendl-Arlt standing at 45 by one victory.
Third place for the Austrians Steu-Koller, 470 thousandths of a second from the top, who continue to remain at the top of the Cup rankings even if now the advantage over Eggert-Benecken has dropped to just 20 points. Another good performance for the second double white-red composed by Yannick Mueller and Armin Frauscher who finished in fourth place in front of the Sics-Sics veterans.
Subdued race for the double blues. Rieder-Kainzwaldner finished in seventh position, a place in front of Nagler-Malleier, while Rieder-Rastner finished only tenths, authors of the best push times but also of a big smudge in the final heat that made them fall 5 positions compared to at the first run.
In the men's single continues the solo by Felix Loch. The German champion had no rivals on his home track, taking his sixth win out of seven races. The two-time Olympic champion preceded the Russian Roman Repilov by 285 thousandths and his compatriot Johannes Ludwig by 701 thousandths. Good comeback for Nico Gleirscher, who recovered from seventh to fourth place in the second heat, also preceding the Russian Pavlichenko.
Try not exciting for Italian colors. The best of the blues Kevin Fischnaller finished in ninth position, while the awaited Dominik Fischnaller finished only in twelfth place, penalized by a first heat which ended in twenty-first position characterized by too many mistakes. In the second run the Carabiniere of Maranza redeemed himself by signing the fourth part time and moving up in the standings. We hope that the Koenigssee défaillance will allow Fischnaller to find new motivations especially in view of the most important appointment of the season, the world championships, which will be held at the end of the month right on the historic Bavarian gut. So the other blues: eighteenth Lukas Gufler, twenty-first Leon Felderer and twenty-ninth Alex Gufler.
Teutonic monologue also in the single female. For the fifth time this season the winner was Julia Taubitz who confirmed that she is the athlete of the moment. The holder of the Crystal Ball also in Koenigssee showed great personality, preceding Natalie Geisenberger by 310 thousandths, seventh second out of seven races, who is still far from her rival especially in the push phase. The Bavarian champion, returning after maternity, was able to train little in this fundamental, but despite this continues to impress for the cleanliness of the lines and it is not excluded that at the home World Cup she may aim for yet another world title. In the overall standings, the two-time Olympic champion continues to lead the ranking with 4 points ahead of her younger compatriot.
Third place for the Austrian Magdalene Egle, the only one to "ruin" poker entirely Made in Germany, given that Anna Berreiter placed fourth and a dull Dajana Eitberger in fifth. As for the blue colors, the best was Andrea Voetter eighth, Marion Oberhofer eighteenth, Anna Hofer twenty-first and Nina Zoeggeler twenty-fourth.
Austrian victory instead in the team test. The white-red team made up of Magdalene Egle, Nico Gleirscher and the double Steu-Koller managed to seize an important success preceding the favorite German team that practically threw a probable victory to the winds with some not exciting tests by Felix Loch and of the double Eggert-Benecken. Third place for Russia, while Italy closed in fifth position being preceded also by Latvia.
