Felix Loch champion not only in a gut, but also in everyday life: the 32-year-old from Sonneberg, Olympic champion in single sledding in Vancouver 2010 and Sochi 2014, recently visited Poland to Ukrainian refugees who fled the war who for almost a month now it has been mowing down their homeland.
The German sled rider arrived in Medyka, a town bordering Ukraine, along with sixteen other people, bringing aid to the facilities that welcome refugees. They also took care of transporting forty-seven refugees, twenty-one children and twenty-six mothers to Germany.
The emotion of this experience can be seen from the words with which Loch, through a post on his Facebook page, told about his humanitarian trip to Poland: "You can't give up!" We athletes hear it so often. Get up and continue. Head held high, something is always possible! Say I've heard so many times! The last 36 hours have changed everything for me: for the first time in my life I am truly speechless, amazed, hopeless! Together with 16 people and 8 buses we were on the Ukrainian border. We saw it live! We heard it! The helplessness and despair of thousands of mothers and children at the Medyka border crossing. This is the horror! I imagined it wrong. Very bad! But what is happening in the heart of Europe is shocking, dehumanizing and astounding me and all of us! 21 wonderful children and 26 incredibly strong mothers and brave girls that we were able to take to Germany safely. Too few!! Too few! I will never forget what we have seen and experienced in the last few hours. Change everything by experiencing these moments firsthand! This war must end! All wars must end! ".
Extraordinary gesture, therefore, that of one of the strongest sled runners of all time, who joins those of many other athletes, who with their possibilities, are trying to help the Ukrainian people tormented by this terrible war as much as possible. , with the hope that everything can be concluded as soon as possible.
