The star of Davide Ghiotto shines in the 5000 meters of Stavanger

The Bronze medal in the 10,000 meters at the Beijing Olympics starts with a bang in the Speed Skating World Cup.

Davide Ghiotto extends his streak of consecutive podiums in the World Cup by obtaining second place in the 5000 meters of the opening stage in Stavanger; the twenty-eight year old from Vicenza, after the third places at the Olympics in the 10,000 meters and in the closing tests of last season in Hamar (5000 and 10000 meters) and in Heerenveen (5000) raises the bar by closing the race in 6.21.512 bowing only to the 'Dutch Patrick Roest (6.20.561). On the ice of the Norwegian ring, the blue colors touch the podium on three other occasions, having to settle for fourth place. In the men's Mass Start, Andrea Giovannini was surprised like the rest of the group by the escape of the German Felix Rijhnen who flew to victory achieved only by the Austrian Gabriel Odor while the blue took part in the sprint for the third step of the podium being preceded by the Dutch Bart Hoolwerf. A fourth place full of hope arrives in the women's Mass Start where the twenty-one year old Laura Peveri gets the best result of her career preceded by the Canadian Ivane Blondin and the Dutch Marijke Groenewoud and Irene Schouten. On the first day the podium was touched in the Team Pursuit by the trio composed of Adaniele Di Stefano, Davide Ghiotto and Andrea Giovannini who with a time of 3.46.06 had to bow to the United States, Norway and Holland.
