The magical Saturday of Italian winter sports ended with the first career victory of the twenty-nine-year-old from Vicenza who had only reached the podium on the longest distance at the Beijing Olympics where he won the Bronze medal.

Ghiotto descends on the ice of the Olympic Oval in Calgary in the penultimate pair together with the Dutchman Patrick Roest, ruler of the long-distance season where in the previous stages he has collected only victories, and round after round he builds his business. At the finish line, the blue stops the clocks at 12''45"10, improving by 88 cents the Italian record he set himself in the Olympic appointment, outdistancing Roest by 6"40 and Beau Snellink by 8"24.
Davide Ghiotto, who also gets the sixth podium in the last seven races with this victory, brings the Italy of Speed Skating back to victory after 13 years in a men's race against the clock. It was Enrico Fabris who won the 5,000 meters in Salt Lake City in December 2009, while to find a victory in the 10,000 meters we must go back to November 2006 where Fabris himself prevailed in Moscow.
In the combined classification of the World Cup 5000 - 10000 metres, Ghiotto with 202 points follows Patrick Roest who leads with 234 points.
