Equipment TestsRudy Project
Autumn is the time when we skiers prepare for the coming season, not only athletically in the gym or at the athletic field with the presciistica, but also at the level of the technical materials we use during our days on the snow, which be these skis, boots, clothing or ski masks and sunglasses.

The protection for our eyes is essential and indispensable for us skiers and must always be of high level, as the glare and UV rays could strain or damage our sight especially when we are in the mountains and on the snow; in addition a good sunglasses or ski mask make the descent pleasant not making our eyes water during the descent, protecting us when the weather conditions are adverse for example when it snows and protecting the eyes from any traumas such as tree branches when you practice Freeride.
Since the hours that we spend in the snow during a day of skiing are many it is essential not to make mistakes when choosing a product.
Nowadays, materials have made a significant leap forward in the field of protection from the harmful and unpleasant effects of the sun rays Uva and Uvb with lenses that protect and protect our sight, all packed with increasingly lighter frames, comfortable and with an attractive design.
During the entire winter season 2017/2018 I tested two ski masks and sunglasses from the Italian brand Rudy Project.
Rudy Project is an Italian excellence of Made in Italy active since 1985 and based in Treviso, all its products are designed, developed and created in Italy with the highest quality materials.
Rudy Project is a well-known brand in the world of cycling, triathlon and the world of motorsport and who tries to open a new gap in the world of winter sports with innovative products and young and dynamic design.
Let's find out the tested models:
SINTRYX ICE GRAPHITE M- POLAR 3FX HD Sunglasses Sintryx model, Ice Graphite frame, polarized lenses model Polar 3Fx Hdr category UV filter 3, weight 30 gr., Male model, interchangeable lenses. Sintryx is the new wraparound design that guarantees maximum eye protection. The innovative Push Release lens change system allows you to better manage every light condition. Just a slight pressure on the central logo and the lower part of the frame opens allowing you to change the lenses with a simple click.Sintryx mounts all three families of Rudy Project lenses from the unbreakable ImpactX photochromic, to the new Polar 3FX HDR polarized lenses and RP Optics. In addition to guaranteeing perfect light management, Sintryx integrates the most advanced Rudy Project technologies such as the soft terminals Adaptive Tips, the Power Flow ventilation system, the new co-injected Ergonose XI or the Optical Insert clip for sportsmen needing visual corrections.
Ski goggles:
SKERMO DEEP BLUE M. - MLS BLUEM Ski jacket model Skermo, frame Deep Blue, lens Multi LS Blue category UV filter 3, weight 187 gr., Unisex model and interchangeable lenses.
SKERMO WHITE M. - KAYVON REDSkermo model ski helmet, White Mat frame, Kayvon Red lens category UV filter 2, weight 187 gr., Unisex model and interchangeable lenses. With an elegant and essential design, Skermo is the perfect ski mask for athletes and simple enthusiasts. The high quality RP Optics lenses protect against UV rays and provide clear vision, the peripheral field of view is wide, while the soft three-layer foam insert ensures exceptional comfort. The double lentre minimizes the risk of fogging and the adjustable strap ensures a comfortable and optimal fit.
The field test: The ski mask of Rudy Project model Skermo is a ski mask with a wide view and then a large lens that gives the user an excellent field of vision, the "foam" makes precise and pleasant the fitted while the double lens and the air intakes do not make the mask tarnish, a very but very important detail, during the whole test period the mask has never blurred. The lenses are spherical and help to discharge and slide snow or rain, while the adjustable elastic has three bands of silicone inside the elastic band that make it stable when used with the ski helmet. The frame is very light but resistant at the same time, aesthetically speaking, the Skermo is very beautiful.
The two tested masks are of the same Skermo model but with different lenses, one is fitted with a Multi LS Blue mirror lens and therefore more alone and with a higher UV filter, suitable for sunny days or on glaciers, even if it has been tested in bad weather, thick fog and during night skiing and the brightness and visibility was always optimal in every situation.
The other tested headband is fitted with a Kayvon Red lens category UV2 filter, a partially mirrored red lens ideal for bad weather and night skiing. Also in this case it was tested during sunny days and was also excellent in these conditions by screening the sun's rays well without straining your eyes.
Pros: - Design / Aesthetics- Comfort- No tarnish- Wide view- Weight only 187gr.- Lenses- Low price
Weaknesses: - Elastic adjustment - White colored elastic tends to get dirty easily
The Skermo ski goggles proved to be a pleasant novelty in the Ski Goggle field, with an attractive and aesthetically beautiful design, the good quality materials used did not wear out and there were no failures or defects during the tests. Excellent lenses both for protection from sunlight and for antifog.
Which one to choose?
Honestly I found myself very well with both types of lens, especially depends on how we are used and what use we want to do, sincerely if I had to choose I would opt for the Multi LS Blue mirror, as I prefer this type of lens in any condition even with thick fog and at night.
On the other hand there is to say that with the lens Kayvon Red during the days of strong fog and bad weather helped me a lot; the ideal option would be to have the two types of lenses to change according to the climatic conditions that we could face.
Now let's move on to the SINTRYX ICE GRAPHITE M-POLAR 3FX HD model, an extremely lightweight sunglasses with polarized lenses. A pair of glasses born above all for the world of cycling, practiced both on the road and off-road with a mountain bike, but that in my opinion could be used for any sport and outdoor activities.
The Sintryx has been tested throughout the winter and has proved to be an excellent eyewear also for the practice of alpine skiing, especially recommended for those users who prefer sunglasses to ski masks. A multipurpose eyewear that can be used 360 ° from skiing during the winter, to cycling, sailing, canoeing and trekking during the rest of the year. Since I am a lover of the ski mask I used the Sintryx especially during the ascent with the skins, while I made great use of the glasses for the descents during the spring when the temperatures began to rise, prolonging the test also to the summer for the practice of other sports.
During the whole period of the tests there were no defects, wear or sagging, the polarized lenses of excellent quality can be easily changed, the 'glasses worn does not bother in any part of contact like nose and ears, the design and colors are very beautiful and give a sense of dynamism.
In conclusion I found the tested products of Rudy Project excellent in terms of the quality of the materials used for the frame both for lenses, multipurpose glasses, comfortable when worn and beautiful in terms of aesthetics. Even the packaging is very accurate in detail, both as regards the rigid cases, both for goggle bags. By consulting the list prices to the public I found an excellent value for money, which is very important and to keep in mind for the protection of our eyes and our sight.
