The road to the 2026 Olympics is full of twists. The latter, in order of time, arrives this morning from Sweden where the new majority created on the Stockholm city council closed the door to the Olympic bid.

The municipal elections of 9 September have created a very fluid situation in the municipal council that has been resolved in recent days with a coalition agreement between the Alliance (a group of center-right parties such as the Moderate Party, the Center, the Christian-Democrats and the Liberals) and the environmental movement. The new majority, intended to govern the Swedish capital for the next 4 years, presented its program this morning at a press conference.
Among the conditions set by environmentalists to enter the majority where their 9 seats are essential is the no to the 2026 Olympic candidacy that was announced this morning, in order to use the funds for other uses. "The starting point in the dialogue between the majority parties was that the Olympics do not have to cost a taxpayer's crown," said a center party spokesman, "Stockholm has other priorities for which we have to work, so it will not host the Games of 2026 ".
The race to the Winter Games of 2026 that on Tuesday saw the International Olympic Committee decide to formally invite three cities - Milan-Cortina, Calgary and Stockholm - after the exclusion of the Turkish Erzurum and a number of expressions of interest shipwrecked by Sapporo in Graz, passing through Sion, it would seem to be reduced to a two-way race between the 1988 Games venue, which, however, lives under the threat of a popular referendum to be held on November 13 and the Italian candidature.
