The result of the popular referendum rejected the Canadian bid to host the 2026 Winter Olympics.

Three hundred thousand citizens of Calgary went yesterday to vote on the candidacy: the 56.4% was against, while the 43.6% is in favor of the possibility of hosting a second edition of the Winter Olympics after that of 1988.
If the referendum was only advisory and not binding, in the past few weeks the federal authorities and the Alberta province had conditioned their funding to a positive result. The NO in the popular consultation represents, therefore, the final act of the candidacy and the city council of Calgary on Monday should definitely write the word end as announced by the mayor Naheed Nenshi, "The population has expressed itself clearly, It 'clear that the candidacy is dead ".
The race for the assignment of the Games of 2026, which will take place in June at the CIO session in Lausanne, is now limited to Stockholm and to the Italian candidature that unites Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo. In Sweden it is still unclear whether the new government will guarantee political support while for Milan-Cortina funding should come from the regions involved in the absence of commitment from the Government.
Behind the scenes the IOC is, in any case, moving to prepare a plan B in case both applications fall. In recent days the US Olympic Committee has launched a procedure to identify the possible candidate for a "future edition of the Games" and the choice will take place by the end of the year while an evaluation team will visit Salt Lake City in the coming days.
