Olympics 2026: Calgary remains in the running, agreement on public funding

A last-minute agreement between the federal government and local authorities on the funding of the candidacy convinced the City Council of Calgary not to switch off while awaiting the referendum on 13 November.

It has been convulsive hours in Calgary where on several occasions in the last 48 hours the candidature to host the Winter Olympics of 2026 has seemed definitely closed. In the night between Monday and Tuesday the local Olympic Committee, due to the lack of agreement to cover costs between central government, province and municipal council, approved a motion that required the city council to express itself in favor of the renunciation of the candidacy. This decision opened hours of feverish negotiations between the parties in question that on Tuesday evening they found an agreement on the allocation of the required public funding, which fell from 3 billion Canadian dollars to 2,875. The Alberta government has confirmed its commitment for 700 million while for the first time the city of Calgary has put the amount of its financial commitment on paper. The city coffers will contribute with 370 million to which 150 will be added already approved for improvements to the city parks of Victoria and Stampede and 200 million in insurance. The federal government, in keeping with its commitment to equalize funding from local institutions, will put 1.423 million on the plate. An agreement that also considering the funds made available by the Canmore authorities can match the expenditure forecast for the institutions. Based on this last-minute agreement, the city council voted yesterday against the recommendation to withdraw the candidacy and now, as already planned, will be the population to have to express in the referendum held for months for the day of 13 November.
