According to the newspaper Il Giorno, the mayor of Cortina Gianpietro Ghedina received a formal request to hold an advisory referendum on the candidature for the Winter Olympics 2026.

Already for the candidature for the World Ski Alpine Championships of 2021, the city council was forced to pass through a popular consultation that saw the favorable prevail with 59%. Three years later the story is repeated and spokesman of the request is Roberta de Zanna, already in the foreground then.
In the letter registered today at the municipality ampezzano, publishes Il Giorno, account is taken of the "involvement of all citizens and the implications for the territory that derive from this decision; the proposal was not included in the electoral program of any list and therefore no proper debate has developed on it; most of the cities that intend to apply for hosting the Olympic Games verify the support of the population through a referendum, so that it can be considered a well-established practice, in compliance with the needs of the International Olympic Committee, which takes due account of this support.
In the next few days the mayor will meet Roberta de Zanna to evaluate the next steps, taking into account the peculiarities of a multi-regional Olympic bid such as the one presented by CONI for Milan-Cortina.
