In the National Council last Tuesday the CONI decided to advance the candidacy of an Italian city to host the 2026 Winter Olympic Games. A commission led by Carlo Mornati will have to examine the Milan, Turin and Cortina files and express an opinion not later beyond September 10th.

The candidacy of Cortina and the Dolomites is based on economic, social and environmental sustainability, so much so that with the exception of an ice stadium in Bolzano no new permanent structures would be built, but only temporary and reusable works after the torch was switched off. According to the project submitted to the CONI, the Ampezzo city would host 7 disciplines: Snowboarding, Freestyle, Curling, Bob, Sledding, Skeleton and Alpine Skiing, in addition to the main Olympic village, the medal plaza and the press center. The strong point would therefore be the proximity and accessibility of the various venues. The other locations chosen to host the competitions would be the Val di Fiemme for Salto, Combinata and Fondo, Piné for Speed ​​Skating, Bolzano for hockey, Merano for Skating and Short Track and Anterselva for Biathlon. According to the dossier, 70% of the plants already exist, while the rest requires modernization. The bobsled track named after Eugenio Monti and closed for 10 years should be refurbished to accommodate the gut disciplines. Cortina will host the World Ski Championships in 2021, an event that could become a test in view of the Olympic Games, which would return to the Dolomites exactly 70 years after the first edition.
