Olympic Games
In yesterday's National Council the CONI decided to advance the candidacy of an Italian city to host the 2026 Winter Olympic Games. A commission led by Carlo Mornati will have to examine the Milan, Turin and Cortina files and express an opinion no later than September 10th.

At the moment the strongest candidacy seems to be that of Milan, a city that has never hosted the Olympics but has just returned from Expo 2015. The Milanese dossier submitted to CONI's attention includes the dislocation of the various sporting events in three areas: Milan, the Valtellina and the Engadine. In the city all indoor sports should be staged: hockey at Palalido, figure skating and short track at the Assago Forum, curling at the former Palasharp and speed skating in a new 18,000-seat building that will rise in the Santa Giulia neighborhood. On the other hand, the Valtellina would host alpine skiing, cross-country and biathlon competitions, while in the Engadine there would be the toboggan, bob and ski jumping competitions, taking advantage of the existing structures on site. The dossier also provides an Olympic village for each location: the Milanese should rise at the disused railway station of Porta Romana, the Valtellinese at the old hospital of Sondalo, while in Switzerland the athletes would be housed in a hotel in Sankt Moritz. Very interesting the proposal to create four fan zones located in strategic areas of the city, probably at the Castello Sforzesco, Piazza Gae Aulenti, Piazza Tre Torri and Darsena and to transform Piazza Duomo into the medal plaza, a truly evocative setting.
