It was in the air, after delivery to the participants of the IOC session of Buenos Aires of the evaluation report of the commission led by the vice-president of the IOC, Juan Samaranch, who had effectively excluded Erzurum. It was a question of about twenty minutes, the Spaniard summed up the judgment on the three cities that were aiming for the candidacy and the session voted unanimously.
Milan-Cortina, Calgary and Stockholm will receive a formal invitation from the CIO to work on their application dossier for the assignment which, originally scheduled for next September in Milan, required some logistical changes . The IOC rules stipulate that the session that proceeds to the assignment of the Games can not take place in a running nation; as already anticipated weeks ago, the Italian candidacy means that the session can no longer take place in Milan but will be moved to Lausanne. The news is, however, that the three candidates will have two months less to work: the CIO session will be anticipated around 23 June.
Juan Samaranch, inviting the session to follow the commission's recommendation, stressed that "the three candidates have a major project in line with the Agenda 2020, so that in the future each of them will be able to support the IOC in this direction. perfect and the necessary skills, each of the three would be an ideal partner for the CIO and all three are guarantees of Olympic heritage, nothing will happen in 2042 that will make us ashamed of the choice ".
