2030 Winter Olympics: a referendum will soon be held on the Barcelona-Pyrenees bid

The Catalan government believes in it, even if for the post Milan-Cortina 2026 edition, rivals seem to be not lacking, from Salt Lake City to Vancouver and Sapporo.

Lara Vilagrà, the minister of the Catalan presidency, said that the referendum on the potential candidacy for the 2030 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games could take place before the summer of this year. Vilagrà said the project cannot continue unless the citizens involved vote in favor of the Barcelona-Pyrenees 2030 candidacy. Citizen involvement includes a list of 77 Spanish municipalities directly and indirectly interested in the project, for a total of 63,000 people. In a recent poll by the Catalan government, 75% of the population is in favor of the candidacy; a crucial referendum to carry out the five-circle project, given that already by 2026 Innsbruck, Sion and Calgary were defeated, paving the way for Are and Milan-Cortina, a candidacy later won by the latter. Last month the first meeting was held between the various members of the Catalan and Aragonese commission to explore the possibilities of candidacy. Now, with the referendum scheduled, Barcelona-Pyrenees 2030 opens the door to a challenge with the other potential candidates for the Olympic review. The commission members will travel to Beijing in the next few days to understand the potential offer. Consequently, the Spaniards join the other candidates: Vancouver considered the idea 20 years after the 2010 Olympics, Salt Lake City on the contrary is still considering whether to aim for the 2030 or 2034 Games. Ukraine seems willing to continue the candidacy for any offer, but the current socio-political situation must currently be considered. Finally Sapporo, the favorite among the candidates even if in recent times the Japanese have had to change course to reduce the budget, due to the effects of the pandemic.
