Sapporo in trouble temporarily suspends its bid for the 2030 Olympics

The Tokyo 2020 corruption scandal puts the final decision for the 2030 candidacy in a complicated situation whose future is shrouded in mystery.

The 2030 Winter Olympics goes in a complicated direction in choosing the venue that will honor that year's games. There is no good news from Japan through the candidacy of Sapporo which has decided to temporarily suspend its candidacy. The real reason for this decision is the corruption scandal surrounding the Tokyo 2020 Olympics with Haruyuki Takahashi executive member of the council for the Japanese capital's Summer Olympics. Takahasi has been accused of accepting bribes from company officials and has been arrested multiple times and has been in custody since August. Among other things, he is a former executive of the advertising giant Dentsu which sponsored the 2020 Olympics. Katsuhiro Akimoto, mayor of the candidate city has declared that they will not abandon the project, but will put it on hold with the aim of having a clean Olympics to ensure that there are no accusations or fraud against Sapporo. Therefore, the Japanese will revise their offer to try to gain more confidence as the scandal has tarnished their candidacy. In fact, Sapporo plans to conclude the new candidacy plans in the spring of 2023 and therefore hold a referendum to gain the support of the population. A blow to the city that hosted the 1972 Winter Olympics as it was the favorite to conquer the 2030 Olympics among the eligible candidates; with Vancouver and Barcelona now withdrawn, Salt Lake City takes the chair, which announced that it wants to aim for 2034 in order not to have sponsorship problems with Los Angeles 2028. A complicated situation that leads the IOC to very difficult decisions considering that it had postponed the next congress in India scheduled for May 2023 to November 2023, and then even postponed it beyond 2024 and thus give the candidates more time to organize themselves.
