In a climate that is anything but Olympic, less than two weeks after the conclusion of the Olympic Games, the Beijing 2022 Paralympics are also ready to take off.
Friday the opening ceremony, Saturday the first races (there will be free descents for alpine skiing immediately), but we talk about nothing but the political situation and, news of this morning (the afternoon in China), here comes the decision of the IPC, the International Paralympic Committee, to exclude Russian and Belarusian athletes from the competition.
A surprising choice since, even on Wednesday, the national teams involved in the war in Ukraine had been admitted to the Games, albeit as neutral and without anthem and flag. "Following a specially convened meeting, the IPC board of directors has decided to refuse the registrations of the Russian and Belarusian federations in the Beijing 2022 Winter Paralympic Games - reads the note - This means that the para-athletes of these countries will no longer be able to participate in the Games starting on 4 March 2022 ”.
Apparently, as various sources confirmed to SkyNews, there has been a lot of pressure from most IPC members, as many nations have threatened to give up the Paralympic Games if Russian and Belarusian athletes were present.
