Pila: skiing in the heart of the white Aosta Valley

The official website lists 70 km of alpine ski runs, distributed mainly between Pila at 1,800 metres and the 2,723-metre Stella di Pila. The ski area includes 4 blue, 21 red and 4 black runs: a distribution that clearly reveals the resort’s vocation, making it particularly suitable for intermediate skiers. The relatively high altitude, sheltered position and a network of more than 200 snow cannons for artificial snowmaking generally help maintain good conditions throughout the season.

The easiest runs and the ski-school areas are concentrated in the Baby Pila, Baby Gorraz and Grimod sectors, where beginners and children can take their first steps in spaces separated from the main runs. However, the choice of blue runs is not particularly extensive: Pila is therefore more interesting for those who have already acquired a reasonable degree of independence on skis than for complete beginners intending to spend an entire week there.

The heart of the ski area consists of its many red runs, which are generally wide, well groomed and enjoyable. The Chamolé, Leissé, La Nouva and Gran Grimod sectors offer flowing runs on which to alternate wide turns with more technical sections. As you climb towards Couis 1, Couis 2 and Platta de Grevon, the gradients increase and the terrain becomes more open, with descents aimed at experienced skiers and interesting freeride opportunities as well, to be tackled only in suitable conditions and with the necessary preparation.

Among the best-known runs are the panoramic Bellevue, the technical Du Bois–Renato Rosa, the Gorraz and the descents running down from the Couis area. Overall, Pila is not a huge ski area, but the snow is almost always excellent, the runs make good use of the vertical drop and form a compact network of pistes, in which transfers between the different sectors are fairly quick. The Area Effe snow park, in the Grand Grimod area, rounds out the offering for snowboarders and freeskiers.

In recent years, the lift network has undergone a major modernisation phase. The main new addition is the 10-seater panoramic gondola Pila–Couis–Stella, completed in December 2025. The new lift has replaced slower connections and makes it possible to reach an altitude of 2,723 metres in around 15 minutes from Pila and approximately 30 minutes from the centre of Aosta. At the top is the Stella di Pila, a panoramic facility with a bistro overlooking the main Alpine peaks. The lifts serving the principal ski routes are generally fast and efficient, although some less recent facilities remain in a few secondary sectors.

One of the resort’s greatest strengths is its accessibility. The Aosta–Pila gondola departs near the city centre and reaches the slopes in around 18 minutes, allowing visitors to leave their car in the valley and combine skiing with the services, restaurants and historic attractions of the Aosta Valley capital.

Overall, Pila is recommended above all for intermediate skiers, who will find many varied and well-connected red runs, but it also offers plenty of interest for experts and families. The relative shortage of easy runs and its size, which cannot compare with that of the major international ski circuits, are offset by its convenient access, the quality of the pistes, its recently upgraded lifts and one of the most comprehensive panoramas in the Aosta Valley.
