The refuge has been the subject of controversy over the name Negerhütte believed to be racist.

In Germany an online petition was born in which over 7000 signatures were collected for the change of the name of the refuge "Negerhütte - Black Hut" in Corvara, in Alta Badia, as it was considered racist.
From now on, therefore, the refuge will be called only "Black Hut" as explained by the managers of the hut on their Facebook page: "After the countless communications received in the last few days - for which we are grateful to all those who have worked for a just cause and they drew attention to the difference between intentions and effect - we decided to take a step, which had been due for some time: we will leave the German name of our ski cabin, to use only the Italian one, Black hut. The name of our hut built 100 years ago, which referred to the black wood used for the construction, is no longer contemporary and sustainable, because the understanding of the language as everything is subject to historical changes and today's connotation is different than it was then . Precisely in a period of political revolution it is necessary to be good at listening and not closing the concerns of those who rightly fight relations of secular power. We want to take these protests and structural changes into account with our change of name, which will take effect immediately. "
In the previous days, also via the refuge's facebook page, the managers had also announced why the hut had been called "Negerhütte": "We want to explain that there are no racist motives behind his name. To protect from the wind and the weather the wood with which the hut was built was painted black with carbonileum, to which it owes its name of Latin origin (niger = black). The name is absolutely not connected to a population. We openly oppose any form of racism, xenophobia and discrimination. Every guest, regardless of origin, has always been welcome. "
