Yesterday, Wednesday 19 May, two avalanches hit two mountaineers on the French side of Mont Blanc.

Black Wednesday on Mont Blanc: a skier and a guide, respectively 23 and 61 years old, both originally from the Chamonix valley, lost their lives in a double avalanche.
The first victim, who was 23, was hit by a snow gap upstream of the Cosmiques corridor, shortly after 10:30. His skiing partner, together with other people present in the area and with the help of five gendarmes of the PHGM managed to extract the body from the snow, after the avalanche had dragged him for 500 meters. Unfortunately there was nothing to do: the young man was already dead.
Shortly after 12:45, however, the same fate befell a 61-year-old expert guide, well known in the surrounding valleys as she was also a rescuer. The man, who was on the crest of the Cosmiques, fell into a channel on the south wall, where a large amount of snow buried him. Help was useless in this case too, despite the help of various canine units: the guide's body was found lifeless.
The local gendarmerie has made it known that, despite the period, there are still huge amounts of snow and has strongly advised against this type of excursion. The turnout in the area at the time of the tragedy was quite high, as the Aiguille du Midi cableway reopened after seven months.
