Sella Nevea - Kanin

On the Italian side, the ski area officially offers 10.5 km of alpine ski runs, extending between the village at 1,140 metres and the 2,133-metre altitude of Sella Prevala. The vertical drop is therefore close to 1,000 metres, while artificial snowmaking covers around 80% of the runs. The altitude and exposure generally favour a long season and some of the most abundant natural snowfall in Friuli Venezia Giulia.

The modern Canin cable car departs from the resort and reaches the basin of Rifugio Gilberti at approximately 1,850 metres. From here, the Prevala Funifor ascends to 2,133 metres at the border with Slovenia. Overall, the Italian ski area has three lifts, as well as a magic carpet in the beginners’ area.

The runs have very different characteristics between the upper section and the descent back to the valley. Above Rifugio Gilberti, skiing takes place in an open, vegetation-free, almost high-mountain environment, while the long descent towards Sella Nevea tackles steeper slopes and sections through the forest. There are not many runs, but the vertical drop and the shape of the terrain allow for long and technically interesting descents.

Sella Nevea is particularly suitable for intermediate and expert skiers. Some runs are used for training and international competitions, while the slopes of Canin are well known among freeride and ski-mountaineering enthusiasts. Away from the groomed runs, however, the karst terrain, the presence of sinkholes and the avalanche risk require experience, suitable equipment and the accompaniment of mountain professionals.

Beginners have access to a small ski-school area in the valley floor, but the overall offering is better suited to those who already have a reasonable command of skiing. Families may also appreciate the resort’s tranquillity and the short distances between facilities, although they will find fewer easy runs and fewer services than at larger ski areas.

The Prevala Funifor created a ski-in/ski-out connection with the Slovenian Bovec-Kanin ski area, forming the first international ski area between Italy and Slovenia. However, the Slovenian side has remained closed in recent seasons due to problems with, and the technical expiry of, the cable car providing access from Bovec. Until it actually reopens, the available ski offering therefore remains limited to the Italian side of Sella Nevea, with no possibility of crossing the border on skis.

The ski area is not large and may feel limited for a long holiday devoted exclusively to downhill skiing, but it stands out for its substantial vertical drop, snow quality and the rugged environment of Canin. It is a particularly interesting destination on favourable days, while wind, fog or difficult snow conditions may lead to the closure of lifts and high-altitude runs.

There is also a 2.5-km cross-country skiing loop in the valley floor. The winter offering is completed by snowshoeing and ski-mountaineering routes, to be undertaken only after carefully assessing the snow conditions, as well as the possibility of combining Sella Nevea with the other ski resorts of Friuli Venezia Giulia.

In summer, the Canin cable car facilitates access to Rifugio Celso Gilberti and the high-altitude hiking routes. The massif is known for its via ferratas, including the Brigata Julia, and for its extraordinary system of caves and karst cavities. Nearby are also the Montasio plateau, the Fontanone di Goriuda and numerous trails leading to mountain huts and peaks in the Julian Alps.
